How to Turn Off "Autoplay" Videos on Facebook and Browser

Most sites now arrange to have videos that play automatically when they open. This makes them heavy with weak signal conditions.

It feels annoying if suddenly the browser immediately plays the video on a site page, without being asked. Data bandwidth consumption will go up immediately for buffering.

Especially if the speaker or earphone is being adjusted at maximum volume, of course, it can be surprising. Is there a way to prevent video content from being played automatically by the browser?

Of course, there is.

Chrome

Click the menu button (marked with a three-line icon) in the top right corner of the browser window.

Then select "advanced" and click the "Content settings" button in the Privacy section.

In the new window that opens, scroll down and select the option that says "Let me choose when to run plugin content".
Then, click the "Manage individual plugins" link in the window plugins.

Find Adobe Flash Plater and remove the check in the "Always allowed to run" option.

So, Chrome won't automatically play Flash-based videos.

The space for videos on the site will turn into a picture of a puzzle piece.

Users can still play the video in question manually by right-clicking and selecting the "run this plugin" option.

Automatic playback of HTML5-based videos can be done by downloading an extension called "Disable HTML5 Autoplay" from the Chrome webstore.

Firefox

Type the address "about: addons" (without the quotes "in the URL column to open the browser add-on settings menu.

On the left tab, open the Plugin menu, look for the parameter "Shockwave Flash.

Then change the selection from the drop-down menu on the left side of "Always activate" to "Ask to Activate.

Now, flash video content on the site will not be played automatically and will only appear in the form of a white box with a flash logo in the center.

Videos can be played by clicking "allow" in the video playback notification bar that appears at the top of the browser window.
To stop automatic playback of HTML5 videos, type "about: config" in the Firefox URL column.

Click the "I'm be careful, I promise!" Button in the warning window that appears.

Then look for the "media.autoplay.embed" parameter in the search column at the top.

Double-click on the text line to change the value from "true" to "false".

Internet Explorer

From the menu bar at the top of the window, select "Tools" then "Manage add-ons".

In the new window that opens, select "Toolbars and Extensions" on the left.

Then wait for a while until the full option opens on the right side of the window.

Look for the "Shockwave Flash Object" option on the right side, located under the "Adobe" category.

A new window will appear. Click the "Remove all sites" button at the bottom.

After this step, the flash video content on the site will appear to be empty or none at all.

A notification bar at the bottom will display the option to play the video.

Click the "x" on the right to choose so the video doesn't play.

For HTML5 videos, there is still no way that can be done to stop automatic playback in Internet Explorer.

Edge

Edge does not have the option to turn off automatic video playback, both Flash and HTML5 based.

This latest browser provides settings to turn off all Flash altogether.
