What is AI Upscaling on Samsung QLED TV?
One interesting thing about the latest line of Samsung QLED TVs is the AI Upscaling feature. Maybe someone asks what is AI Upscaling?
Simply put, AI Upscaling is a feature that can improve the quality of the display of video content from previously low resolutions such as FHD to high resolutions such as 8K.
This feature is important because 1 main thing: 8K resolution video content and even 4K is still very minimal. Of course, it's useless if someone has an expensive 8K resolution TV but no 8K video content can be played.
With this AI Upscaling, the problem can be solved. Have a classic movie whose resolution is only Standard Definition or 480p? Now it can be played more properly on an 8K TV.
But it should be noted that the quality of the video produced by the AI Upscaling feature on this Samsung QLED TV depends on the quality of the video initially as well. The worse the quality of the original video, the worse the results will be.
The picture above is one example of AI Upscaling with a Standard Definition resolution video base. It can be seen that there was not much damage to the image when the video was displayed on an 8K QLED TV measuring 98 ".
Unfortunately, for now, it is unclear how much the image quality is improved for everyday use because the video demo provided by Samsung is likely to use high-quality SD resolution videos. The reality is that most SD and FHD videos circulate a lot, the quality is not high.
Technically the AI Upscaling feature can be done thanks to the Quantum Processor on Samsung's QLED TV. One of the main tasks of the processor is increasing video quality to 8K resolution, minimizing noise, local dimming, color control, and HDR control.
Samsung uses the Machine Learning Super Resolution (MLSR) approach to implement the AI Upscaling feature. It took 10 years for Samsung to develop AI Upscaling to be widely used.
Millions of low resolution and high-resolution images have been analyzed through machine learning. Low and high-resolution images with the same object and texture are compared to then the best method is made to increase image resolution low to high.
Because video is a far complex object compared to audio or static images, processing through the cloud or the internet will be very risky. Therefore AI Upscaling processing is done locally on the Quantum Processor in Samsung QLED TVs.
Because this feature is machine learning-based, more and more people are using QLED TVs with the AI Upscaling feature, eating the smarter machine in improving video quality. Either a few years into the future will evolve to be as sophisticated as the AI Upscaling features.
