Review Vivo S1 --- Vivo has released their latest middle-class smartphone in Indonesia that looks very trendy.
Present with the tagline "Unlock Your Style", this Vivo S1 can fulfill the needs of today's digital era, especially young people who want to always appear. Priced at a price of $255 at launch, what Vivo offers on this smartphone does look quite tempting.
Vivo S1 is available in two color variants, namely Cosmic Green and Skyline Blue. For Vivo S1 I use this is a Cosmic Green variant. Which surprised me a little, even though it was given the name Green Cosmic, but overall the body was dominated by blue with a touch of light green and purple.
This color combination makes Vivo S1 look elegant and beautiful. Plus the golden color accents on the Vivo logo and where the camera adds a premium impression. The back also has a shiny surface like glass.
The surface certainly makes fingerprints very easy to stick so that the smartphone quickly looks dirty. Fortunately, Vivo directly provided a transparent silicone case in the sales package to be used as a protector.
This Vivo S1 design reminds me of Realme 3 Pro complete with a vertical logo in the lower-left corner. It's just that, Vivo looks more beautiful thanks to the gold accent and the color display that isn't boring. In fact, I think others will at first glance consider Vivo S1 a flagship-class smartphone.
Grasping Vivo S1 is fairly comfortable thanks to the presence of a 2.5D design that makes the edges slightly curved. In my opinion, the body itself still feels too square for my taste.
Unfortunately, the Vivo S1 still uses a micro USB port that has been abandoned by other smartphones in 2019. In addition, the "home" of the camera also pops up high enough so that the smartphone won't lie flat when placed on the table if it doesn't use an additional case.
No big deal, but it might be quite annoying for some people like me who operate smartphones more often on the table.
Turning to the front, Vivo S1 offers a Super AMOLED Ultra All Screen with a range of 6.48 inches with Full HD resolution + 2340 x 1080 pixels. With a screen-to-body ratio of up to 90%, the Vivo S1 screen feels wider than conventional smartphone screens.

The resulting image also looks sharp, bright, and has accurate colors. Those who are accustomed to using IPS sailing smartphones are guaranteed not to want to come back again after trying the Vivo S1 screen.
This smartphone also features an Always-On feature like the Samsung Galaxy device that can display various information such as time, battery, date, and notifications continuously without the need to wake up the device.
Interestingly, the use of the Super AMOLED panel allows Vivo to embed a fingerprint sensor under the screen called Screen Touch ID. This is worth a thumbs up because Vivo is able to provide fairly new features to smartphones that have a much more affordable price.
The Touch Screen ID can read my finger quickly and accurately. In addition, there are animations that appear around the sensor when successfully reading fingerprints so it doesn't look boring. There are several animated variants that Vivo provides and all of them look futuristic.
One thing to note, the new sensor can detect fingers when the screen or area of the sensor around is lit (the sensor area lights up automatically when the smartphone is lifted) so sometimes I have to press the power button first. Still understandable because this type of sensor does require light to read fingerprints.
Even so, I prefer the fingerprint sensor below the screen because it feels more natural to use than the finger scan sensor that is on the back of the smartphone.
Another advantage of this Vivo S1 is the camera side. To accommodate selfie lovers, Vivo S1 offers a 32MP front camera that features a variety of artificial intelligence features ranging from AI Face Beauty, AI Selfie Lighting, to AR Stickers.
Using the Vivo S1 camera feels very satisfying because it not only produces sharp photos, I can also be more creative so that photos become more unique. AI Beauty can make my face more smooth and still look natural while the AI Portrait Light Effect can provide various interesting effects.
For the matter of selfie ability, I think the skill of Vivo is no doubt. For those who have used a Vivo smartphone before, they certainly know what can be expected from their front camera.
At the same time, the Vivo S1 has three rear cameras with the configuration of a Sony IMX499 16MP lens, a 2MP depth lens, and an 8MP Super Wide-Angle lens that has a vision angle of up to 108 degrees after calculating distortion.
This combination makes the Vivo S1 rear camera versatile because it can be used in a variety of conditions. The shots of the three cameras are also quite good starting from objects that look detailed to neat bokeh effects.
Not only has a capable camera capability, but the performance provided by Vivo S1 also should not be ignored.
Armed with the MediaTek Helio P65 Octa-Core chipset at 2.0GHz speed, 4GB RAM and 128GB of storage. The Gyroscope sensor is available in it, but NFC must be absent this time. This specification makes Vivo S1 able to devour a variety of today's applications easily and run smoothly.
Its strong performance is reflected in the benchmark results I have done. Vivo S1 gets an AnTuTu score reaching 145,601 while Geekbench scores 1,843 for Single-Core and 5,929 for Multi-Core.
Vivo S1 also has the Ultra Game Mode feature that can enhance the playing experience by managing various things such as minimizing notifications, increasing performance, and Off-screen Autoplay which can keep the game running when the screen is off.
Therefore, gamers will not be disappointed with the performance provided by Vivo S1. Especially with internal storage reaching 128GB allowing users to install many applications and games simultaneously without worrying about running out of space.
With such performance, surely navigating a smartphone also feels comfortable and smooth. It's just that, I feel Vivo needs to fix their Funtouch OS 9 operating system. The appearance really reminds me of Apple's iOS, but it's a bit messier.
For new users, it takes time to adapt to the menus provided because it is quite confusing. On the bright side, Funtouch OS 9 has many useful features that can be used.
One that I often use is Smart Motion because it allows the Vivo S1 screen to turn on automatically when I lift it. In addition, there is also a Clone App that can duplicate applications and Smart Mirroring which makes it easy for me to display smartphone content on a smart TV.
Vivo S1 is also equipped with Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity and WiFi support in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands to make the connection more optimal.
With all these specifications, Vivo entrusts a 4,500 mAh battery as a source of life for this smartphone. Vivo is still waiting if users do not need to bring Powerbank again in their daily activities.
These claims may be true too because the Vivo S1 is at a level of 50% information capable of burning for 10 hours 27 minutes on PCMark for Android battery testing that simulates the daily performance load in general.
The ability of the Vivo S1 is further enhanced by the presence of Dual Engine Fast Charging technology that allows the battery to be charged quickly. As long as I use this Vivo S1, I only need to wait about 35 minutes so that the battery is charged from 17% to 54% while the battery is fully charged takes less than 2 hours.
After using it directly for some time, I can say that Vivo S1 is a very reliable device because it can meet all the needs of today's young people ranging from excellent cameras, high performance, good multimedia experience, and long-lasting batteries.
Indeed, there are still some things that Vivo can improve, especially Funtouch OS 9, which in my opinion is the main obstacle to this smartphone because it requires adaptation to be used comfortably.
Overall Vivo S1 is a satisfying smartphone from all sides so I don't hesitate to recommend it to friends or family who want a smartphone that is affordable but has good specifications.
